On behalf of the SCS faculty and staff, I’d like to say a huge thank you to our PTSA for all of the love you showed us during Teacher Appreciation Week. The care and time you devoted in feeding us and providing gifts is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to all families for any kindnesses you provided last week.

AP Exams

Attention all AP students, if you are taking AP Calculus AB (Tuesday, May 14) or AP English Language and Composition (Wednesday, May 15), you must arrive by 7:45 a.m. to be seated for the exam. Please make sure that you arrange for transportation so that you arrive on time. All others, you will be seated at 12:00 p.m.

Daily Testing Schedule

Parents, your child should have received the daily testing schedule with their progress reports.  These were printed on bright red paper and given to your child on Thursday.  If you did not receive it, you may stop by the main office to get another copy.

Carpool Procedures

Parents please remember not to use the bus parking lot when picking up for middle school carpool. All vehicle traffic should enter through the main entrance.

Bull City Coachella/SCS Grammy Awards

It’s time for Bull City Coachella and the SCS Grammy Awards. Tuesday, May 21, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Rhythms Live—Durham & the Triangle’s hottest elegant venue for live performance. Special guest Jamal Thompson, producer associated with P. Diddy and others will present awards. Please plan to join us.

Panera Bread Dine-Out Night

Please join us at Panera Bread (3800 N Roxboro St,Durham, NC 27704) for our last spirit night of the school year! On Thursday, May 23 from 4pm – 8pm, Panera Bread will donate 20% of our supported sales to the PTSA.

Free Full Frame education program for High Schoolers

Full Frame is sponsoring a free educational program for Durham Public School students (grades 9 – 12). SCHOOL OF DOC is a five-week summer course taught by professional filmmakers in which students discover the link between documentary filmmaking and real-world job skills. Proctors Needed

Parents, testing season is right around the corner and that means that we need volunteers to help proctor.  Our heaviest days will be on Friday, May 24th, Tuesday, May 28th, Wednesday, May 29th, and Thursday, May 30th. Please contact Mr. Boston in the main office if you are able to assist. We’d love for you to tell others to contact us if they’re able to help out.

Parents of 2019 Graduating Class Information

If your child has not ordered their cap and gown and handicapped seating is required for a visitor please email Ms. V. Barnes at Vanessa.barnes@dpsnc.net by Wednesday, May 15th.  If cap and gown is required email their name, height and weight.  Also, if handicapped seating is required email the graduates name and the individual guest name(s) that need handicapped seating.  Payment arrangements can be made until Wednesday, May 15th.  All late orders must be placed by Wednesday, May 15th and information about handicapped seating.

Graduation tickets will be issued the week of May 27th. Tickets are required for entrance and lost tickets will not be replaced.

Caps and gowns will be issued on Friday, May 31st and June 3rd.  We are having our senior walk on June 5th at 9:00 am.  Graduates are required to wear their cap and gown for the senior walk.  Parents we would love for you to attend.

Graduation location is Riverside High School.

Graduation rehearsal is Monday, June 10th at 5:00pm.  Students must arrive by 4:30 pm.

Graduation ceremony is Tuesday, June 11th at 5:00 pm.  Students must arrive by 3:30.   Doors open for the public at 4:00 pm, no entrance before that timeframe.

College Application Workshop–Rising Seniors

This summer the Game Plan: College Team will be hosting a College Application Workshop! The workshop will run from June 17, 2019 – June 28, 2019. This is open only to rising high school seniors who attend school in the Durham Public School system. There will be two sessions offered each day; one from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and one from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Students who register are not required to attend both but will have the opportunity to select which session works best for their schedule. Space is limited to the first 60 students who register.

During these two weeks students will be covering the following topics:

  • Creating a college list
  • Writing college essays
  • Writing a resume
  • Learning how to ask for letters of recommendation
  • Looking for scholarships
  • Attending a campus tour
  • Engaging in community service

Weekly Message–April 29-May 3, 2019

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of April 29.

Teacher Workday—May 1

Reminder that school is closed for students Wednesday, May 1. There will be no make-up day required for this date.

 

2nd Tasting Event

Event will be held April 30 @ 6:00 p.m. The first tasting event was a big success. If you missed it, you certainly do not want to miss this one! Attend with your family and produce the featured partner chef creation!

 

PE Students’ Mile Run

Students in Ms. Sims’ classes will run their last mile of the semester Tuesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 2.

All students should dress appropriately for the weather as it is expected that all classes will be outside for the activity.

Students should bring a water bottle with them to keep hydrated during the activity as well as any medications they may need.

 

AP Exams

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams for students enrolled in those courses will begin the first week in May. Once finalized, students will be notified and dates will be posted on our website. Teachers will continue to prepare students for these exams up until the designated exam date.

 

AP Course Information

There are exciting changes coming to Advanced Placement courses.  Ms. Tuck Thomas will be holding sessions for rising 10th -12th grade students.  Students are invited to learn more about how they can successfully take AP courses while in high school, earn college credit, and save money on tuition.
Sessions will take place Monday and Tuesday this week in the Student Lounge during High School lunch.

 

Prom Tickets on Sale

Jr./Sr. Prom is next weekend!  If you purchased tickets, pick up from Ms. Street. If you need to purchase tickets, see Coach Barnes or Ms. Street. They are $65 for one and $120 for two. The last date to purchase tickets is May 2.

 

Senior Signing Day

Senior parents, family and friends are invited to attend our 2nd Annual Senior Signing Day where we will recognize seniors and their postsecondary plans. This event will be held May 3 at 2:00 p.m.
