Attention all AP students, if you are taking AP Literature and Composition (Wednesday, May 8); AP US History (Friday, May 10); AP Calculus AB (Tuesday, May 14); AP English Language and Composition (Wednesday, May 15), you must arrive by 7:45 a.m. to be seated for the exam. Please make sure that you arrange for transportation so that you arrive on time.

The 5th Annual YMA Banquet will be held Friday, May 31 from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. at The Durham Armory downtown. The cost for students and staff is $15.00. There will be good food and a lot of dancing. Please see Coach Barnes or any YMA member for more information.

 

Recurring Announcements for Students

Pie in the Face is this Thursday during lunch. If you have not pre-registered please ask your homeroom teacher for the link. During afternoon announcements, we will reveal the list of teachers you will get to pie. Most teachers will be $2 per throw. Administrators will be $5 and if you want to get real it will be $10.

Weekly Message–April 29-May 3, 2019

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of April 29.

Teacher Workday—May 1

Reminder that school is closed for students Wednesday, May 1. There will be no make-up day required for this date.

 

2nd Tasting Event

Event will be held April 30 @ 6:00 p.m. The first tasting event was a big success. If you missed it, you certainly do not want to miss this one! Attend with your family and produce the featured partner chef creation!

 

PE Students’ Mile Run

Students in Ms. Sims’ classes will run their last mile of the semester Tuesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 2.

All students should dress appropriately for the weather as it is expected that all classes will be outside for the activity.

Students should bring a water bottle with them to keep hydrated during the activity as well as any medications they may need.

 

AP Exams

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams for students enrolled in those courses will begin the first week in May. Once finalized, students will be notified and dates will be posted on our website. Teachers will continue to prepare students for these exams up until the designated exam date.

 

AP Course Information

There are exciting changes coming to Advanced Placement courses.  Ms. Tuck Thomas will be holding sessions for rising 10th -12th grade students.  Students are invited to learn more about how they can successfully take AP courses while in high school, earn college credit, and save money on tuition.
Sessions will take place Monday and Tuesday this week in the Student Lounge during High School lunch.

 

Prom Tickets on Sale

Jr./Sr. Prom is next weekend!  If you purchased tickets, pick up from Ms. Street. If you need to purchase tickets, see Coach Barnes or Ms. Street. They are $65 for one and $120 for two. The last date to purchase tickets is May 2.

 

Senior Signing Day

Senior parents, family and friends are invited to attend our 2nd Annual Senior Signing Day where we will recognize seniors and their postsecondary plans. This event will be held May 3 at 2:00 p.m.

 

Proctors Needed

Parents, testing season is right around the corner and that means that we need volunteers to help proctor.  Our heaviest days will be on Friday, May 24th, Tuesday, May 28th, Wednesday, May 29th, and Thursday, May 30th. Please contact Mr. Boston in the main office if you are able to assist. We’d love for you to tell others to contact us if they’re able to help out.

AP Exam Review Sessions

Durham Public Schools is offering AP Exam review sessions on April 27th at CMA (City of Medicine Academy). Sessions are 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. – 12:40 p.m., pre-registration required. Please check the high school resource wall for registration information.

ACT Score Reports

Parents of 11th grade students.  ACT score reports were sent home with your child.  If your child was absent, he/she should see Ms. Tuck Thomas to receive his/her score report on Monday.  Students are encouraged to create their ACT accounts so that they can see detailed results and information on how they can increase their test score.

Keep our Earth healthy! Students & staff are reminded to recycle & terra-cycle using the available bins in the front lobby and the cafeteria. Students remember to collect your items from lunch and recycle them too! Some example items for collection are:

— Toothpaste tubes/caps, Toothbrushes, Floss containers, Outer packaging for all

— Hair, skin, cosmetic: ALL bottles, caps, tubes, sprays, triggers, jars, lip balm tubes, ALL make up containers, eye/lip pencils, etc.

Attention all Seniors—May 3 is our 2nd Annual Senior Signing Day! We will celebrate your decision to become a full-time employee, enlist in the military, or enroll in college. Ms. Settle will see you Thursday to complete your Senior Exit Survey. 8 weeks until graduation, Let’s Go!

Juniors and Seniors: Prom is about 3 weeks away.  If you have not purchased at ticket, now is the time to do so.  Also if you are bringing a guest from outside of SCS, you need to pick up a guest form from Ms. Street, Coach Barnes or the front office.

Prom is on Saturday, May 4th from 7:30 – 11:30pm.  The cost is $65 per person and $130 per couple.  If you are in need of financial assistance, please let us know.

The Emily K Center Game Plan: College Team will be hosting a College Expo on Saturday, April 20, 2019. Over 50 colleges and universities from all across the United States will be present for students and/or parents to visit and talk to.
