Mary Burnett Talbert

Anti-lynching activist, Orator, and Suffragist

Mary Burnett Talbert was a founder of both the Niagara Movement in 1905 and its successor the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1910. It was through the NAACP that Mary Talbert became a leader in the anti-lynching movement. Talbert and the Anti-Lynching Crusaders publicized the horrors of lynching and provided a focus for campaign fundraising.

The Best of Enemies is an upcoming American drama film directed and written by Robin Bissell. It is based on the book The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South by Osha Gray Davidson. It is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 5, 2019. Durham Public Schools is providing an advanced screening of the film at the historic Carolina Theatre on March 19, 2019 from 10:30-12:30 p.m. at NO COST for students. Interested students should pick up permission forms from the main office. Completed forms MUST be returned to the main office no later than Monday, March 4 to be considered for this opportunity!

Students, please be mindful that this field trip will take place during intercession so you will need to be dropped off at SCS by 9:45 a.m. and picked up by 1:00 p.m. If you are unable to secure transportation to and from school, you will not be able to participate. Peace Pilgrim was a non-denominational spiritual leader, pacifist, and vegetarian activist. In 1953 she started a cross country personal pilgrimage for peace. She stopped counting miles in 1962 when she marked 25,000 miles and was on her seventh cross country march when she died in 1981.

Civil Rights, Activist

Dorothy Cotton was the only woman in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s inner circle and one of the most influential women in the civil rights movement. She developed the Citizen Education Program, teaching disenfranchised people the importance of political participation and methods of nonviolent protest.  She fearlessly faced off with Klu Klux Klansman who frequently violently disrupted civil rights demonstrations. Her book If Your Back’s Not Bent: the Role of the Citizen Education Program in the Civil Rights Movement was published in 2012.

Gun control Advocate

Sarah Brady became active in the gun control movement in the 1980s after her husband was permanently disabled in the failed assassination attempt on President Reagan. She was the most visible gun control activist of her time and was instrumental in the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, more commonly known as the Brady Bill, in 1993. In 2000 Handgun Control Inc was renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Sarah Brady was appointed chairwoman, where she served until her death in 2015.

President/CEO of the National Congress of Black Women

Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq. has made her biggest mark as an activist for peace and human rights, having traveled and worked on issues around the world. In her book, The Peace Terrorists, she details a 40-day peace mission she undertook with 200 women from around the world for the purpose of working to prevent the first Gulf War. As an active civil and human rights leader, she continues to fearlessly protest injustice and brutal world-wide occupations. She is currently the National Chair of the National Congress of Black Women.

You Are Invited: Durham Council of PTAs present A Digital Families Community Event

Raising children in the age of smartphones and social media brings new challenges and concerns for all families. That’s why we are inviting you to join Durham Council of PTAs on March 16, 2019 from 8:30am – 12:30pm at Brogden Middle School, 1001 Leon Street, Durham 27704 to our Digital Families Community Event, which promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology among children and families.

 During this event your family will learn together about the importance of digital safety and online behavior through various workshops. Some of the things you can expect to talk about are password security, online communication, and how to be a connected as a family online.

98% of kids 8 years and younger have access to a smart device. It’s important that our families know how to keep each other safe and be the best versions of ourselves online. We hope to see you March 16th to get the conversation started!

Weekly Message–March 11-15, 2019

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of March 11.

NO Gryphon Grind

We will have building upgrades done during intersession; therefore, Gryphon Grind will not be held during spring intersession.

 

PowerSchool New Platform

The state is migrating PowerSchool to a new platform over the weekend, and the process is going to take longer than usual. PowerSchool users will likely not have access to the system Monday, March 11. This includes Parent Portal and Student Portal.

 

End-of-Year Benchmark Assessments

Students will take our final benchmark assessments this week. These assessments will be online in grades 6 and 7 reading and math; grade 8—reading, math and science; and high school—Math I and III, Biology and English II.

 

Registration Documents

All students, both middle and high school, should have brought home a registration packet last week.  Students met with their counselors and completed course selections during the week. Students were supposed to bring home their selections to share them with you and obtain your signature.

This is a reminder that all registration packets are due back to either Ms. Meza-Keuthen or Ms. Settle tomorrow, Monday, March 11.

 

PTSA Meeting

Mark your calendars for the upcoming PTSA meeting! The date is Tuesday, March 12 at 5:45pm. Light snacks will be served at the meeting. We look forward to seeing you all there.

 

Healthful Living Classes

PE – Sims’ Students will have the mile on Monday, March 11 through Tuesday, March 12, 2019.  Come prepared with all medications and appropriate clothing and shoes.

All Healthful Living students should use this week to turn in ANY missing work to their instructors by Friday, March 15, 2019.  No work will be accepted after that date for any work due in the 3rd Quarter.

Annual Gryphon Giveback Campaign

It is time for our 4th Annual Gryphon Giveback Campaign. As a PTSA, we hold the Gryphon Giveback as our one major fundraiser of the school year. This event is going to run until Friday, March 15th. A suggested donation amount is $10, but please feel free to donate what is in your heart and your budget. Students should bring home the paper forms no later than Monday afternoon. Forms will also be available in the front office. You will be able to donate online as well. Please see the PTSA blog or Facebook page for the link.

A Digital Families Community Event

Raising children in the age of smartphones and social media brings new challenges and concerns for all families. Durham Council of PTAs is inviting you to attend a Digital Families Community Event, which promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology among children and families. It will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 8:30am – 12:30pm at Brogden Middle School, 1001 Leon Street, Durham 27704.

 

Emily K College Expo

The Game Plan: College Team will be hosting a College Expo on Saturday, April 20, 2019. Over 50 colleges and universities from all across the United States will be present for students and/or parents to visit and talk to. Deborah Tucker

President of the Board of Directors of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence

Deborah D. Tucker has dedicated over 40 years to ending violence. She founded and led several organizations while working with many to advocate for improvements to laws, polices, and practices at the local, state, national, and international levels. Most notably, she helped write and pass the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and co-chaired the Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence. Tucker is currently President of the Board of Directors of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence.

The Best of Enemies is an upcoming American drama film directed and written by Robin Bissell. It is based on the book The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South by Osha Gray Davidson. It is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 5, 2019. Durham Public Schools is providing an advanced screening of the film at the historic Carolina Theatre on March 19, 2019 from 10:30-12:30 p.m. at NO COST for students. Interested students should pick up permission forms from the main office. Completed forms MUST be returned to the main office no later than Monday, March 4 to be considered for this opportunity!

Students, please be mindful that this field trip will take place during intercession so you will need to be dropped off at SCS by 9:45 a.m. and picked up by 1:00 p.m. If you are unable to secure transportation to and from school, you will not be able to participate. Co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence

Kathy Kelly is a peace activist, pacifist, and author, one of the founding members of Voices in the Wilderness, and currently a co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence. As part of peace team work in several countries, she has traveled to Iraq twenty-six times, notably remaining in combat zones during the early days of both US–Iraq wars. Kelly’s recent work has focused on Afghanistan and Gaza and protesting US drone policy.
