New Announcements for Students

High School students: The Job Corps visit will not be held today. Ms. Settle will announce the rescheduled date.

Drama Club: Remember your Tenny Purey due at our next meeting on Tuesday.

Our next restaurant night out will be this Sunday, January 27 at Texas Roadhouse in Durham. A flyer will be posted on the PTSA website, on the school’s social media websites and sent home with the students. Please present this flyer to your server during your dining experience and 10% of meal total will be donated to the SCS PTSA.

Recurring Announcements for Students

Vocabulary Club will be held Monday, January 28 until 5:15 p.m. in room 228. Please RSVP via email or in person to Ms. Williams. Refreshments will be provided.

Live Performance, Guitar Club, and Guitar Lessons will meet Wednesday, January 30 until 5:15 p.m. in room 231.

Counselors from the Emily K Center’s College Game Plan will be on campus Tuesday, January 29 at 1:05 p.m. in the Cybrary to discuss college entrance tests, College Match, paying for college, and how to properly complete college applications. All high school students are welcomed. Please see Ms. Settle for a pass.

Keep our Earth healthy! Students & staff are reminded to recycle & terra-cycle using the available bins in the front lobby and the cafeteria. Students remember to collect your items from lunch and recycle them too! Some example items for collection are:

— Family-size, individual & multipack snack bags

— Toothpaste tubes/caps, Toothbrushes, Floss containers, Outer packaging for all

The 5th Annual Spread the Love Carnation Sale is back! Do you have a special someone or want to buy your mom or grandma something nice for Valentine’s Day? For $3 you can buy a carnation, $12 you can buy 6, or for $20 you can buy a dozen! The colors are red, pink, and white. Lastly, your flowers and personalized card will be delivered directly to your Valentine. See Coach Barnes for more details.

Any Juniors of Seniors interested in a college tour to visit High Point University and UNC-Greensboro, please see Ms. V. Barnes or Ms. Settle for a permission slip. We will leave SCS at 7:15 a.m. on February 21 and return by 3:45 p.m. The cost of the trip is $30 and will include transportation and lunch. Completed permission slips and money are due by February 1. We will be taking only 30 students. See Ms. Settle if you have any questions.

Female Juniors and Seniors Meredith College will hold its annual Women’s Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 2. Visit Ms. Settle’s website for registration information on this FREE leadership event.

Seniors: Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation currently has 4 scholarship opportunities open to all students. Please see the High School Resource Wall or Ms. Settle for more information. Completed applications are due by March 1.

Durham Youth Work Summer Internship applications are now available at www.durhamnc.gov. Your application must be complete by March 3. See the High School Resource Wall for more information.

10th – 12th grade students, if you would like to explore careers, build your resume, and learn about the exciting world of work, then you may want to apply for the Durham Public Schools Scholars-At-Work Program. It is a four-day workplace immersion experience within a Triangle-area company. The program will be March 25-28 which is during intersession. After you graduate from high school and apply for a job, you are more likely to get hired if you have prior work experience. Transportation and lunch will be provided. Application packets will be here in the office and the deadline to return the application is February 1.

Attention all middle schoolers: Jr. YMA is hosting The Battle: Grade vs. Grade Dance on January 25, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. The cost of the dance is $5.00 and concessions will be sold. See Coach Barnes or Mr. Marshall for more information.

Southern High School will open their Skilled Trades Academy in the fall of 2019 for rising Juniors and Seniors. Graduates of this program have the ability to enter into jobs or paid apprenticeships immediately following graduation. See the high school resource wall for more information.

NC A&T will host the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders for rising seniors. Students interested in College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, Laboratory Research, and Leadership training should see Ms. Settle for more information.
