New Announcements for Students

10th – 12th grade students, if you would like to explore careers, build your resume, and learn about the exciting world of work, then you may want to apply for the Durham Public Schools Scholars-At-Work Program. It is a four-day workplace immersion experience within a Triangle-area company. The program will be March 25-28 which is during intersession. After you graduate from high school and apply for a job, you are more likely to get hired if you have prior work experience. Transportation and lunch will be provided. Application packets will be here in the office and the deadline to return the application is February 1.

The Cooking/Gardening Club will start Thursday, January 17, 2019. If you are interested in eating good food and using your hands, come join Ms. Laws and Ms. Sims. Bon Appetit.

Drama Club meets Tuesdays afterschool until 5:15 p.m. in COPE 105 with Ms. Chase. Sorry for the changes. We are trying to include as many members as possible.

Please congratulate Justin Bell, Brooke Rogers, Karina Becerra, London Avent, and Abdur-Rhaman Glover for outstanding performance in their academic fields and displaying our SCS values. Go see their awards in the display by the cafeteria!

Congratulations to Grayson Adams on his admission to William Peace University and to NC Wesleyan College where he earned a $50,000 scholarship.

Attention all middle schoolers: Jr. YMA is hosting The Battle: Grade vs. Grade Dance on January 25, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. The cost of the dance is $5.00 and concessions will be sold. See Coach Barnes or Mr. Marshall for more information.

Vocabulary Bowl Club will be meeting Monday, January 14 in Room 228 until 5:15 p.m. You must RSVP if you are planning to attend refreshments will be served. Please make sure your ride is here on time for pickup.

Way to go SCS!!!  We’re at the top of the leaderboard board for Vocabulary.com in the entire district!!  Currently, our students have answered 292,277 questions and mastered 14,417 words.  Woohoo!!!

Welcome to the new year for walkers & runners! The Walking/Running Club will start Wednesday, January 16, 2019. We will meet in the Health Room. Please come dressed and ready to get started. The time is 4:15 – 5:15 p.m. Please have your transportation ready to pick you up on time. We look forward to seeing you.

Live Performance Club sign-up with Mr. Evans in Room 231 for an audition time. This will give you an opportunity to perform and record.  We welcome instrumentalists, singers, trumpet, sax, flute, guitar, drums, rappers, keyboards, piano players…all are welcome.

Any high school student interested in taking STEM and Liberal Arts classes at Duke University this summer, please check the high school resource wall for application information.

Southern High School will open their Skilled Trades Academy in the fall of 2019 for rising Juniors and Seniors. Graduates of this program have the ability to enter into jobs or paid apprenticeships immediately following graduation. See the high school resource wall for more information.

Any senior applying to SCAD please see Ms. Settle about a $20,000 per year scholarship opportunity.

NC A&T will host the Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders for rising seniors. Students interested in College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, Laboratory Research, and Leadership training should see Ms. Settle for more information.

Any Senior applying to NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, or UNC Greensboro, please see Ms. Settle to get information on the Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship.

Keep our Earth healthy! Students & staff are reminded to recycle & terra-cycle using the available bins in the front lobby and the cafeteria. Students remember to collect your items from lunch and recycle them too! Some example items for collection are:

All FOIL-LINED bar wrappers—any brand

Plastic cereal bags and box liners
