Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of October 22.
Report cards will be distributed to students on October 25. Please note that this is a week later than originally planned. Students will come home with an envelope that includes their report card and other important information. Please review all contents and return only the envelope signed. If you have concerns about grades, contact the individual teachers.
Upcoming High School Testing
All 10th grade students will take the PreACT on Thursday, October 25, 2018. Students, be sure to eat a good breakfast since this test will last beyond your lunch time and you will be eating later than usual.
11th grade students who signed up to take the PSAT will complete the assessment on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Students, please be sure to review the student guide and practice materials that were given to you on Monday or Tuesday by Ms. Tuck Thomas. Students, be sure to eat a good breakfast since this test will last beyond your lunch time and you will be eating later than usual.
Join us on October 25 for an evening of information. We’ll begin at 5:30 with dinner sponsored by PTSA and General PTSA meeting. At 6:30, you’ll have your choice of breakout sessions including College Night, Instructional Supports, Identifying Depression, the Emily K Center, and Understanding the School Report Card. Please contact Ms. Price with any questions. We hope to see you there!
Fall Make-up Pictures
Make-up pictures for students in grades 6-11 will take place on Friday, October 26. Additionally, we will have grade level photos for all students on the same day. Students may pick up pre-pay envelopes from the main office.
Ms. Sims’ PE Classes
Students in Ms. Sims’ PE Class will have their monthly mile on Thursday October 25 and Friday October 26, 2018. Students are reminded to wear the proper and comfortable clothing and shoes for the cooler weather and, if possible, to bring a water bottle. If they have a reusable one that would be great. Please contact Ms. Sims if you have any questions.
2 Hour Delay—November 6
Durham Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, in observance of Election Day. Currently, twenty-one of our schools serve as polling locations. We expect higher-than-normal traffic in the morning at our schools and want to give staff, teachers and our 18-year-old students a greater opportunity to participate in the election.
SCS will be hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on November 13th from 11:00-3:30. Due to the recent hurricanes, the Red Cross blood supply is extremely low. Donation appointments are open to anyone in the community and all blood donated during our drive will help our students earn scholarship funds from the Red Cross. All students can donate at age 17 and those age 16 can donate with parental permission. Please visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code CREATIVE to sign up for a donation appointment. Contact Dr. Rathbone for more information.
I’m happy to announce our recent staffing changes. Ms. Neville who was our front office receptionist, is now our Restorative Practices Coordinator and will be working with students who are assigned to Gryphon Time. We welcome Mr. Boston who has started and will be working with students, families, and staff in the main office. Our new high school math teacher, Ms. Fletcher, will begin work on Wednesday, October 24. Please give them all a warm SCS welcome.
Have a good evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4C’s—Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
