Weekly Message–October 29 – November 2, 2018

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of October 29.

Link to the National PTA School of Excellence base survey~~~The PTA knows that a strong partnership among our families, school leaders and community members is important to the success of our students and school. That’s why we are participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program, which grows partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being of all students. We need your help! As part of the process, National PTA requests feedback from families, administrators and teachers. Look for a flyer to come home with your student for the link to the anonymous survey or you can access it now from the front page of the SCS website or on my blog. Thanks in advance for your input. https://scsptsa.wordpress.com/2018/10/16/help-to-make-scs-better/

Fee Waiver Request Forms~~~High School Parents, fee waiver requests were sent home with report cards. These were printed on yellow paper and are due to Ms. Tuck Thomas by Wednesday, October 31.  If your child is enrolled in an AP course or plans to take any SAT or ACT assessment this year, these forms must be on file with the school so that we can request and approve fee waivers.

AIG Documents~~~Do you have a student in middle or high school who is identified as AIG?  If you missed the annual meeting in August, you received your child’s DEP and invitation to conference with their report card.  Please sign both documents and ensure that they are returned to Ms. Tuck Thomas.  All information covered at the August meeting can be found on the AIG website that is accessible under the parent’s resource tab on the SCS webpage.  These are required documents that we must have on file for each identified student.  Also, DEP summary reports will be sent home with progress reports in November.  Be sure to be on the lookout for these documents.

Student Costumes~~~Students are allowed to wear costumes on Wednesday. Costumes must follow the DPS Dress Code. Masks, hoods, hats, etc. are not allowed. Props and accessories need to remain at home.  If you have a question about your costume, please see an administrator prior to Wednesday. You may also want to bring a regular change of clothes because if your costume is disruptive to our learning environment, I will ask you to change. I allow costumes because this is something that our students enjoy; let’s use common sense so we can continue this SCS tradition.

Election Day 2-Hour Delay~~~Durham Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, in observance of Election Day. Currently, twenty-one of our schools serve as polling locations. We expect higher-than-normal traffic in the morning at our schools and want to give staff, teachers and our 18-year-old students a greater opportunity to participate in the election.

SCS Blood Drive~~~SCS will be hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on November 13th from 11:00-3:30. Due to the recent hurricanes, the Red Cross blood supply is extremely low. Donation appointments are open to anyone in the community and all blood donated during our drive will help our students earn scholarship funds from the Red Cross. All students can donate at age 17 and those age 16 can donate with parental permission. Please visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code CREATIVE to sign up for a donation appointment. Contact Dr. Rathbone for more information.

Have a good evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4C’s—Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.
