March is National Women’s History Month–Each year there is a special Theme and women whose lives exemplify that theme are selected as National Honorees.  NEVERTHELESS SHE PERSISTED:Honoring Women Who Fight All Formsof Discrimination Against Women

The 2018 National Women’s History theme presents the opportunity to honor women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their tireless commitment to ending discrimination against women and girls. The theme embodies women working together with strength, tenacity and courage to overcome obstacles and achieve joyful accomplishments.

Mille Dunn Veasey was born in Raleigh, NC in January 1918. Ms. Veasey celebrated her 100th birthday this year. Ms. Veasey graduated from Washington High School in Raleigh in 1942 and voluntarily enlisted in what was known as the Women’s Auxiliary Corps, an all black, all female unit. Ms. Veasey said about her enlistment, “I didn’t weigh more than 102 pounds didn’t know how to tie my tie.” After her honorable discharge from the army, she returned to Raleigh and enrolled and graduated from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh. Mille Veasey was the first female president of Raleigh NAACP. In 2016, President Barack Obama recognized Ms. Veasey for her outstanding service to this nation. When asked this year what she wanted for her birthday, she answered, “Just take me to get ice cream.” Ms. Veasey remained an active member of the St. Augustine Alumni Chapter activities and in her Raleigh community. Millie Dunn Veasey died on March 9, 2018 and we honor her today for her service as a civil rights leader and a military pioneer.
