Weekly Message–January 22-26, 2018

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of January 22, 2018.

All students enrolled in Biology will take their district semester mid-term exam at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23rd. We will administer benchmarks for all middle school and Math I students January 29th – February 2nd. Subjects include reading and math for grades 6 & 7, and reading, math, and science for grade 8.

As 8th grade parents already know from the letter that was sent home with students last week, Ms. Cooke has resigned her position with DPS. We have completed interviews and will introduce the new science teacher when I receive a start date.

The SCS Middle School is excited to host our annual Spelling Bee this Friday, January 26th at 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. Winners of the grade level bees have advanced and will compete to represent SCS at the district level. Parents and your guests are welcome to attend to cheer on our students.

There will be a College Fair on January 31st here at SCS from 1-3pm. Catawba College and Campbell University will have onsite admissions during the College Fair. All high school students will participate in the College Fair.

All seniors please make sure you turn in all college acceptance letters to Mrs. Settle and please continue to work on completing your FAFSA.  SCS will hold a college night for all senior parents on February 8th at 5:30 p.m.  A representative from Durham Tech will be in attendance to help parents with FAFSA applications.  If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Settle.

It’s Box Tops submission time again! Turn in your Box Tops before February 19, 2018 so they can be included in our school’s April check – it’s our last chance this school year to earn cash for our school.  BE SURE TO PUT YOUR HOMEROOM TEACHER’S NAME INSIDE THE ZIPLOC BAG with your Box Tops.

Parents, this is a reminder that if you have a sibling that you wish to attend our school, the sibling must be entered into the DPS magnet lottery and linked to the current student in the online lottery application. Siblings are only eligible for priority seating if SCS is first choice in the lottery selection and if the sibling resides at the same address as the current student. A seat must be available in the grade applied for to receive priority seating. The DPS magnet lottery can be accessed online at https://www.dpsnc.net/ and the deadline is February 2nd, 2018 at 5:00pm. Please contact our Magnet Coordinator, Dr. Rita Rathbone with questions related to sibling priority seating.  If you need assistance with the application during the week, it will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the DPS Staff Development Center. Application Assistance on Saturday has been moved to Jan. 27, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Staff Development Center, 2107 Hillandale Road.

The flu and cold season is upon us. In order to make sure we take the best care of our students, we ask all of our families to keep in mind the following:

  • Students who have a fever (over 100 degrees), are vomiting, or experiencing diarrhea are not only miserable while at school but can be contagious and place others at risk for getting sick.
  • Please make sure we have accurate contact information so we can reach you when your child becomes sick or has an emergency at school.
  • When students are sick, especially when they have fever, it’s best for everyone that they remain home until well and have been fever free for 24 hours.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Parents: we are having our first SCS Career Fair on February 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Are you interested in volunteering your time? If so, the requirement is for you to setup a booth in our gym and speak with students as they visit your table concerning requirements/skills needed for your vocation. If you would like to participate, please check out the link: https://tinyurl.com/y9q32pjj Contacts are Ms. Vanessa Barnes and Ms. Settle.

Superintendent Dr. Mubenga is hosting public town hall meetings to share his vision of academic excellence for all of our students, presenting his “Four Guiding Principles.” He will ask you to provide input on how these principles can be applied to improve DPS and will use it to help create a new strategic plan that will guide Durham Public Schools into the future. Details for all town halls are posted on Facebook, my blog and the DPS website. The town halls this week will be held Monday, January 22nd at Jordan High School and Tuesday, January 23rd at Northern High School, both at 7:00 p.m. Please come and share your ideas.

Have a great evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the
