Weekly Message–December 11-15, 2017

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of December 11, 2017.

We will not administer the benchmarks during this week as previously planned. The district has decided to move our benchmark window to the end of January/early February. I will provide an update as we get closer to those dates.

All students enrolled in online courses with a semester end date of 12/15/17, will take their midterm final on Tuesday, December 12, 2017.  This is a proctored exam, so it is imperative that all students are present.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Bridges.

Coach Barnes and Ms. Sims are having a Student Run-Off on Tuesday, December 12th.  The Middle Schoolers will run at 1pm and the High Schoolers will run at 2pm.  We plan on running on the track unless we have inclement weather, then we would run in the Big Gym.  We invite SCS staff and parents to come and observe the races.

We are still accepting pre-orders for the 2017-2018 SCS Yearbook.  The yearbooks can be purchased in the form of check, cash or online.  Make checks payable to SCS. To purchase online, go to http://www.strawbridge.net use Online Code 110739.   All purchases made by January 31, 2018, will receive the discount rate of $35.  For an additional $5, you can have your child’s yearbook personalized.  Additional envelopes are located in the main office for your convenience.

Senior Parents—students received an important packet of information last week regarding graduation topics…including ordering caps and gowns. Please review the packet and return the signature page by the due date. If you have not received this packet for review, ask your student.

All senior parents, please make sure that you are completing the FAFSA as well as the Residency Determination Application for your students.  They will not gain full acceptance until these applications are complete.  If you need any assistance please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Settle.   The holiday break is also a great time to continue to apply to college. We are halfway to June 11, 2018 so let’s finish 2017 with a BANG!

The Durham County Office of the Sheriff has partnered with Durham Public Schools to collect canned food December 4-15 for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Our SRO, Deputy Ferrell will be the point of contact at SCS. Most-needed items are canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat, canned beans and soup, cereal, whole-grain pasta and rice, peanut butter, personal hygiene items, household items, and paper products. Pop-top cans and microwavable cups are preferred; no glass containers please. A complete list of the most needed items is posted on my blog and available in the front office. Boxes will be located in our front lobby. Thanks in advance for your support!

The PTSA has extended the dates for the men’s clothing drive into January. This is to support the Urban Ministries of Durham, which is in very short supply and receives very few donations of men’s clothing. Please drop off your donations to the SCS front lobby during office hours.

I’d like to remind everyone that this week is a full week of school. School is in session for students and teachers through Friday and the last day of the quarter is Friday, December 15, 2017. Intersession runs December 18 – January 5. Students return to school on Monday, January 8.

Have a great evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4c’s—Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Community.
