This week is Constitution Week! Here are some interesting facts about those men who went to Philadelphia and proceeded to write a set of laws that has lasted over 200 years. 7 had been State Governors, 41 had been congressmen, 35 were lawyers, 6 signed the Articles of Confederation, 8 signed the Declaration of Independence, more than half were college graduates and had fought in the American Revolution, most were married and had families, 4 were life-long bachelors, 12 owned large farms or plantations, 13 were businessmen, merchants, or shippers, 11 speculated in securities on a large scale, 3 were physicians, 6 were land speculators, 2 were small farmers, and 1 was a University President. All had vast political experience.

DPS’ school counselors and representatives from over 100 colleges and universities throughout the U.S. will be available to assist students and their families in gathering information about their college options.

Students age 15-18 who are passionate about art, music, writing, performing and film-making, please check out the National Young Arts Foundation. This program offers winners a $10,000 cash prize. Program information and website can be found in the Student Services Office.

Attention all students taking DPS Virtual online Spanish courses:  If you are taking any of the DPS Virtual Spanish courses online and are interested in getting free tutoring help for these courses, please see Mr. Castro in room 244 on Monday but no later than Tuesday between the hours of 12:35 to 1:05 to express your interest and sign up for tutoring sessions for these courses. The administration and Mr. Castro would like to start a Saturday Academy to meet at least two Saturdays per month and perhaps even a few days during the fall recess break to help you succeed in these courses. We are proposing to meet from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. You must organize your own transportation from home and back if you will participate, and make sure you are picked up no later than 12:15 p.m.  Once again, show your interest and sign up with Mr. Castro Monday but no later than Tuesday between the hours of 12:35 to 1:05 p.m.

A representative from the admissions office of Duke University will be on campus September 21 at 9:00 a.m. In the Student Lounge.  All interested high school students are welcomed to attend.

The Equestrian Club will meet Tuesday, September 19 from 4:15 – 5:00 since Wednesday is an Early Release Day. Anyone who is interested in then fall trail ride should plan to attend.  The Equestrian Club is having its fall trail rides. Inexperienced riders sign up for September 23. Riders who have experience riding will be on October 21. Cost is $20.  You do not have to be a member to attend. See Ms. Bouck to sign up for more information.

Keep our Earth healthy! Students & staff are reminded to recycle & terra-cycle using the available bins in the front lobby and the cafeteria.

There are many items for collection.  Please check Ms. Price’s blog for the complete list.  Here are a couple of featured collection items:

All brands aluminum & plasric drink pouches with straws or spouts

YMA is holding a high school dance on Friday, October 20th from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. The cost of the dance is $5.00 and once you buy your ticket, you will be entered into a raffle to win lunch from a place of your choosing. The only requirements are to write your first and last name on the back of your ticket and to attend the dance. Three winners will be drawn.  If you would like to request songs in advance, talk to any YMA member or Coach Barnes.

The Interact Club is conducting the 3rd Annual Book Harvest Book Drive. Look around for your gently used books to donate to those who don’t have access to their own books. Your books can be deposited in the bins in the front hall, in front of the cybrary, and in the entrance to the cafeteria. Drive dates are September 1 -22. We would like to exceed last year’s total of 700 books. Thank you for your kind donations!
