Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of September 18, 2017.
The schedule for ACT and SAT Prep classes sponsored by Durham Public Schools is now available for our students. Each class is $20 and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. ACT sessions are for Juniors only, but SAT sessions are open to Juniors and Seniors. Registration forms are available in the Student Services Office and the main office. If parents have any questions, please contact Mrs. Settle.
Ms. Sims’ Healthful Living classes will be completing their 2nd mile run on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Please come prepared with appropriate shoes and clothing for the weather. It is recommended that students also bring a water bottle with them to class.
This is to remind students and parents that Thursday, September 21st is the 6th grade Health class SEEDs field trip from 1-3pm. Permission slips and the $5 fee should to be turned in to Ms. Sims by Monday, September 18th. If you have any questions please contact Ms. Sims.
Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday for our Early Release Day.
A representative from Duke University will be on campus Thursday, September 21st at 9:00 a.m. for an admissions visit. All interested high school students are welcome to attend.
In Durham Public Schools, each year we strive to make every effort to ensure all students are included in the end of year assessments. Ensuring that all students and parents have information on their achievement and growth for each school year is one of our priorities. Our school missed the federal participation rate targets for the following student groups: African American, Economically Disadvantaged Students and Students with Disabilities for the English II End-of Course Test. As a result of not testing all students, we plan to implement several strategies to ensure at least 95% of all students and student groups are tested.
- Complete transcript analysis for all 10th and 11th graders by November 1
- Ensure all student transfer credit files are reviewed and completed within 10 business days
- Maintain accurate and complete transfer credit files on site for 2 school years
- Engage teachers, administrators, counselors and social workers in locating students during the testing window
- Communicate the importance of testing and your school’s testing dates with school community and families throughout the year
- Enroll students who are off cohort in Credit Recovery and/or dual enroll students in subject area courses.
Also, we will send home a letter with all students on Friday containing this same information. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact me.
If you are selected for the Driver’s Education lottery and contacted this weekend, please respond to claim your seat. If you do not claim your seat, it will go to the next person on the list. The list of selected students will be posted Monday morning.
We have received requests for ways for parents to connect to coordinate carpooling to and from SCS, so we have re-posted the carpooling link on the website and Facebook. Please look for this link if you are interested in connecting to this resource.
The first quarter ends Friday. Students will be out of school September 25 – October 13. We will return on Monday, October 16 to begin the second quarter.
This will be the final weekly message for the quarter. I will return again on October 15th but we will keep in touch via the blog and Facebook. I will also take the intersession break to fully update the website, so thanks for your patience and please look for those changes.
Have a great evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4c’s—Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Community.
