Weekly Message–August 21-25, 2017

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of August 21, 2017.

We received our eclipse solar watching glasses on Friday evening with a warning from Amazon that even though the glasses have the approved markings and were sold as ISO compliant, Amazon did not receive appropriate confirmation from the distributor of the manufacturer source; therefore, out of extreme caution, we will not be using these glasses. If students bring their own glasses, they will be allowed to use those to view the eclipse. If students have signed permission slips, we will proceed with viewing the eclipse outside using approved pinhole viewers that we will provide to students. Those students who did not bring in permission slips or prefer to stay inside will watch via live feed. We will send home letters this week to students who purchased glasses letting you know what your options will be for reimbursement of the $3. We are disappointed in this development but the safety of our students comes first and we will not use these glasses if there is a possibility that they are not authentic.

Join us for our first SCS PTSA Dine-Out Event—SCS Spirit Night at Texas Roadhouse on North Pointe Dr. on August 22nd. Flyers were sent home, or you can print one from my blog or Facebook. Please present the flyer to your server. A portion of the proceeds will be donated back to our PTSA. Have a great meal and support our school.

Please mark your calendars for the Teacher Workday on Wednesday, August 23rd. There will be no school for students on this date.

Art Club is seeking donations for club projects! Some of the ideas that were thrown around were school murals, paper mache sculptures, jewelry making, fashion designing, wood carvings – and the list goes on! We are looking for items such as cans of outdoor and indoor paint, chicken wire, unique cloth and other sewing materials, scrap wood and metal (in good shape), Elmers glue, newspaper, cans of spray paint, jewelry making materials (vintage and new), polymer clay, acrylic paint, unused makeup, and any other materials that you feel as though we can use! Feel free to contact the club advisor Ms. Courtney at Rachel.Hockett@dpsnc.net with any questions or comments. We NEED the help and support of all our parents to make this happen!

On Monday, all 6th Grade Healthful Living students will come home with a permission slip from Ms. Sims about a field trip to the SEEDS organization located in downtown Durham.  Please read it and return it by the due date of September 14, 2017.

Ms. Sims and Mr. Barnes will be sending home the Parent Permission Slip to participate in the Comprehensive Health Education program to Healthful Living students in grades 7 through High School on August 21st and 22nd.  Please read it and return it if there are any questions or concerns.

There are a very few spots left for the Costa Rica trip this spring.  This trip is open to 7th through 12th graders and promises to be an exciting one.  Registration will be final on Sept. 22. Please contact Ms. Wash for details.
