Weekly Message–February 13-17, 2017

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of February 13, 2017.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our next PLC Early Release Day which is February 15. School will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m.

Progress Reports will also go home on Wednesday.

February is Black History Month and Young Women of Excellence is excited to celebrate with you all again this year! Every Monday we will be dressing up to celebrate African American history. Each week of this month we invite you to celebrate, dress up and learn more with us! Monday, February 13th is Gele day. We will also be hosting a Black History Month Showcase on Tuesday, February 21st from 5-7 p.m.  Tickets are $3.  Join us for music, song, dance, and poetry or share something of your own during our open mic segment.

Turn your trash into cash for our school! Join the SCS PTSA’s Teracycle effort by bringing in drink pouches, chip bags, personal beauty bottles, or any of the items listed at the terracycle collection areas. You can find the full list of items that can be recycled on my blog. Look for the blue terracycle bins by the main entrance and in the cafeteria where you can turn in your contributions. Contact Ms. Vincent if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting the SCS terracycle effort.

We are offering targeted afterschool tutoring to identified students in Math 7, Math I, and Biology. Look for letters to come home with those selected students tomorrow. Transportation is available. Please contact Ms. Ellison or me if you have questions.

Senior ads for the yearbook have been extended.  Please submit your information to Ms. Bridges as soon as possible.  Final deadline to be announced.  The $35 early bird special for yearbooks has now ended.  However, you may still purchase a yearbook for only $40.  Personalizations can be made for an additional $5.  Yearbooks can be purchased online or with cash, check or money order.  Please make checks and money orders payable to Strawbridge Studios.

As part of our PTSA Meeting and Art Night, we partnered with Original Works to provide an opportunity for students to have their artwork printed on a variety of items. If you weren’t able to attend Art Night or didn’t finish your art, you still have the opportunity to work on your art at home. If you need an order form, pick one up from the main office. All art and orders will be due on February 17.

For all SENIORS: we are starting a new tradition at SCS – a senior tile wall! Seniors will be given the additional opportunity to have their art put on a tile to be included on the senior tile wall. The cost of the senior tiles will be $20. We will provide opportunities during lunches for seniors to work on their tile art.

We expect the items to be back by the end of March.

There are a couple of community resources I’d like to pass along to you. Please share with this information with others. White Rock Baptist Church has a food giveaway 2nd Saturday of the month starting at 1:00 p.m. St. Joseph’s AME Church has both a food and clothes giveaway every Wednesday starting at 1:00 p.m.

Parents, please check out our SCS AIG website.  It is not just for AIG students.  There are important dates, community resources, and much more! You can access the website by clicking on “Parent Resources” from the SCS website and then the link for “Academically and Intellectually Gifted.”

AP students were provided with the Bulletin for AP Students and Parents when report cards went home.  Please review this publication carefully since it contains valuable information about the AP program.  CollegeBoard has strict testing requirements and we must adhere to them in order for students to receive proper credit. The AP Bulletin provides families with the dates and times of exams that have been predetermined by CollegeBoard.  Any student who is enrolled in an AP course and is scheduled to take an exam at 8:00 AM, must make arrangements for transportation and arrive at SCS by 7:45 AM to be seated.  Please start preparing for this prior to the May exams.

We have started recruiting proctors for end of year state testing May 26 – June 8. We will need approximately 54 proctors for each day of testing this year.    You or someone you refer can sign up by using this link: http://tinyurl.com/SCS2017proctors or contact Ms. Bugg in the main office.

Have a great evening from all of us at SCS where we practice the 4c’s—Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Community.
