Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your Weekly Message for the week of January 16, 2017.
School will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 16th in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.
Report Cards will be distributed Friday, January 20th. We will send them home with students in report card envelopes. Look for important information in your envelope including benchmark results, AIG summary reports, iReady results, and more. Remember to return the signed envelope and keep the contents.
Mark your calendars for our next PLC Early Release Day which is Wednesday, January 25th. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m.
Reminder that yearbooks are on sale. Cost is $35 until the end of January. Senior Ads are available for purchase The deadline to purchase senior ads is January 31st and information has been sent home with students. See Ms. Bridges for more information.
The ENCORE! Afterschool program, which is managed by the DPS Community Education Department, is a high quality afterschool program held right here at SCS daily until 6:00 p.m. Transportation is not provided, but it is a great resource if you are looking for educational support and activities for your 6th – 9th grader afterschool. We have some great things to offer the students this semester, including robotics, computer literacy, coding, STEM projects, outside resources, celebrations, homework assistance and teen initiatives. Scholarships are available for any students who apply so it will be free of charge. Please pick up an application from the main office or Room 120. See Ms. Fuller, ENCORE! All juniors will be taking the ACT this February. Ms. Huth is offering free ACT prep sessions here at SCS after-school every Tuesday until 5:30PM in Mr. Jackson’s room.
Durham Public Schools is offering A.C.T. Prep classes this year at the Staff Development Center on Saturdays from 9:00-12:00 starting Jan.28th and Hillside High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-7:00pm. Any DPS Junior can register for these classes regardless of what school your student attends. Cost is only $20 for 12 hours of instruction and an “Official ACT Study Guide” is provided free. A registration form can be found on the DPS website at www.dpsnc.net or from our guidance office. Limited space is available. There will be a Career and College Promise Info Session – Monday, January 23rd @6PM in the cafeteria. Sophomores and juniors have the opportunity to take college classes while they are still in high school. Don’t miss this chance to learn more.
Seniors: If you have not already submitted your FAFSA you need to do so ASAP. FAFSA means free money for college. Millions of dollars go unclaimed each year because people do not fill out this one form.
Students interested in taking the SAT need to register. Have your students sign up on the High School Resource wall to get help and see if they qualify for a fee waiver.
All 9th grade students will have the opportunity to tour and eat at NCCU on February 6th. Be on the lookout for permission forms next week.
Mark your calendars and plan to join to us for our next PTSA General Meeting on February 2nd. We will also hold College Night on this date for high school parents and students and a fun Art night for middle school students. We’re planning an after-school activity and dinner options to make attending easier for families. Be on the lookout for more information soon!
