Weekly Message – September 12th – September 16th, 2016

Good Evening SCS Families,

This is Mr. Dixon with the weekly message for the week of September 12th, 2016:

I would like to thank everyone who made our SCS Spirit Week such a great success, especially our PTSA. We had a great turnout of staff, students, and families at our Texas Roadhouse Spirit Day event, and excellent participation from our students and staff during our Spirit Week themes each day.

I would also like to thank Coach Barnes and Mrs. Sims for their leadership in making our second annual American Heart Association 5K such a success on Saturday. The weather was great, and all of our runners had a wonderful time demonstrating the importance of leading active and healthy lifestyles.

Please mark your calendars to reflect that Wednesday, September 14th is designated as an Early Release Day for all Durham Public Schools students.

Also, our first intercession of the 2016-2017 school year is right around the corner, beginning September 19th. If you have any questions about the intercession camps being provided to our SCS students over this break, please contact Ms. Ellison

It’s time for Gryphon GiveBack!  Hard copy information went home with progress reports. We are offering a “Stress-Free Fundraiser” option, in which families can make a one-time “stress free” monetary contribution to help eliminate PTSA fundraisers. 100% of your donation goes to The School for Creative Studies and its PTSA, and is tax-deductible. Our PTSA’s ability to fund raise at school is limited. SCS is very fortunate to have MANY active classes and school clubs and these groups have fundraising projects during the year to support their numerous activities. Out of respect, we will strive not to compete with these groups with our fundraising activities. Cash or checks are welcome. You can also donate online at the PTSA store: https://squareup.com/store/scs-ptsa.

We also are looking for a parent representative to serve on the School Improvement Team (SIT). Please contact Mr. Dixon for more information (Jonathan.Dixon2@dpsnc.net)

Our First Meeting of Student PTSA members will be on Monday, September 12th.  We will meet with the student members of the PTSA to get their input on school topics and happenings.  All Student PTSA members are invited to bring their lunch and meet in the student lounge during their lunchtime. Snacks and bottled water will be provided. We look forward to meeting with our student members and listening to their ideas and suggestions.

There are still some slots left for the EFTours trip to Greece in the spring.  The deadline for registration is Friday September 30.  If you are interested in joining us for this adventure, please visit EFTours.com or call EFTours at 800-665-5364 and ask to register for trip number 1787506AK.  If you have any questions, please contact Lee Washalefsky at nancy.washalefsky@dpsnc.net. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to tour Athens, Delphi, the Peloponnese, and a Greek isle. It promises to be a terrific trip.

The SCS Interact Club is conducting its annual book drive.  Check your bookshelves for gently used books to donate to Book Harvest. Look in the front lobby, cybrary, and cafeteria hall for donation bins. Your efforts will provide books for disadvantaged children in the Durham area. We appreciate your help in supporting this worthy cause.

Have a wonderful week from all of us at The School for Creative Studies, where we practice the 4C’s–Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Community!

Weekly Message: September 5th – September 9th, 2016

Good Evening SCS Families,

This is the weekly message for the week of September 5th, 2016:

On behalf of our staff, I would like to wish all our SCS families a happy and restful Labor Day weekend. School will resume on Tuesday, September 6th, and we have a very busy week ahead of us!

Tuesday, September 6th begins our Annual SCS Spirit Week festivities with Pajama Day! SCS students are encouraged to wear their pajamas to school, but are reminded that the DPS policy regarding dress code still applies.

Next, we have Twins Day Wednesday, September 7th, so SCS students should find a twin and come to school wearing matching attire! Again, the dress code still applies for this spirit day as well.

Show your Gryphon Pride by wearing your SCS Spirit Wear or school colors on Thursday, September 8th. The middle and high school homerooms with the highest percentage of participation will win breakfast on Friday morning!
Also, mark your calendars and plan to join us for our September PTSA Dine-Out Event at Texas Roadhouse Restaurant on September 8th from 4-10pm. SCS families can present one of the flyers OR just say they are from SCS while dining, and our PTSA will receive a portion of the proceeds from what our families spend. Dine in or take out!! Peanut Free Zones are also available upon request (please call ahead to request.) We’ll look forward to seeing you there! This is a great way to get a fabulous meal and support our school. Flyers will go home with the students early in the week and can also be found at this link https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9SD21aNNcxoSzZkOWtITmN2aWs

Friday is Wacky-Tacky Day, so students are to find the wackiest and tackiest clothes from the bottom of the bin. Mixing, not matching, is encouraged, but again, students are reminded that the dress code will continue to be enforced.

The Spirit Wear orders are being printed on Friday, and will be sorted over the weekend. All t-shirts and sweatshirts will be delivered on Tuesday. Thank you to everyone who ordered Spirit Wear. We look forward to seeing everyone showing their Gryphon Pride by wearing your Spirit Wear next Thursday for Spirit Day. Again – Spirit Wear will be delivered on Tuesday when the students return from the Labor Day weekend.

We are in need of parent volunteers to help with the American Heart Association 5k at SCS on Saturday morning, September 10th. Please contact Coach Barnes (levon.barnes@dpsnc.edu) or Coach Sims (elizabeth.sims@dpsnc.net) if you are able to help out.

We also are looking for a parent representative to serve on the School Improvement Team (SIT). Please contact Mr. Dixon for more information (Jonathan.Dixon2@dpsnc.net)
