Weekly Message: August 29th – September 2nd, 2016

Good Evening SCS Families,

This is Mr. Dixon with your weekly message for the week of August 29, 2016:

Strawbridge Studios will be here on August 30th to photograph our SCS students for the 2016-2017 school year. The photos taken will be used for the yearbook. This date is especially important for our seniors, as Senior Tux and Drape Pictures will be taking place in the SCS Auxiliary Gym at 9:00am. Seniors were provided order forms on Friday and can pick up another form on Monday, if needed. Remember to bring at least one personal outfit for casual pictures. Ladies should bring a spaghetti strap or strapless shirt to wear under the drape. The tux and drape will be provided. Please note that cap and gown photo sessions for seniors will be scheduled for a later date, so stay tuned!

Also on Tuesday, August 30, SCS has the pleasure of hosting a mini-town hall session with Congressman David Price of North Carolina’s 4th District, presented by our Young Male Achievers (YMA). The town hall will give our students the opportunity to ask Congressman Price questions about the issues they feel are most important. A group of students from all grade levels were selected by their history teachers to attend and ask their questions. We are asking that those selected students dress in business casual clothing for the town hall session. If you would like more information please contact Coach Barnes.

Parents, please check to see if your child received a letter inviting them to 7th grade Math or Math I Intersession Camp to receive extra instruction, and make sure the form is returned to the main office by Tuesday, August 30th.  Also, forms for middle school students interested in attending Robotics camp during intersession are due Thursday, September 1st, along with $80.00.  Please make checks payable to The School for Creative Studies. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Ellison.

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for our September PTSA Dine-Out Event at Texas Roadhouse Restaurant on September 8th. SCS families have to present the flyer OR just say they are from SCS while dining, and our PTSA will receive a portion of the proceeds from what our families spend. This is a great way to get a fabulous meal and support our school. Flyers will be distributed closer to the date of the event.

DPS will offer a Driver’s Education class at SCS during our fall intersession. Sign up will be from September 6- September 12. Class dates are September 19 – September 30 (8:30 -11:30am). Important information like how to sign up, cost, etc. can be found on the blog or students may pick up a flyer from the front office.

We are pleased to announce that the PowerSchool Parent Portal is back online for parent access for the 2016-2017 school year. Check the SCS website for detailed instructions on how to access your PowerSchool parent account. If you have not picked up your log-in credentials or you are new to Durham Public Schools this year and have never had a PowerSchool account, you must come in person to the school between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and present a valid photo ID to pick up your login credentials and account setup instructions. Login information will not be given out via email or by phone due to student data confidentiality laws.

It’s time for Gryphon GiveBack!  Hard copy information went home with progress reports. We are offering a “Stress-Free Fundraiser” option in which families can make a one-time “stress free” monetary contribution to help eliminate PTSA fundraisers. 100% of your donation goes to The School for Creative Studies and its PTSA, and is tax-deductible. Our PTSA’s ability to fund raise at school is limited. SCS is very fortunate to have MANY active classes and school clubs and these groups have fundraising projects during the year to support their numerous activities. Out of respect, we will strive not to compete with these groups with our fundraising activities.  Cash or checks are welcome.  You can also donate online at the PTSA store: https://squareup.com/store/scs-ptsa.

The PSAT will be administered on October 19th for SCS Juniors!  Students wanting to take the PSAT should pay $15.00 by Friday, September, 2nd. Please see Ms. Tuck Thomas for more details.
