Weekly Message — February 8 -12, 2016

I’m sure that you have seen news reports or heard from your student that we had a community demonstration today during high school lunch. I want to reassure you that it was peaceful and it was outside the school building. We value the cultural heritage and life experiences and backgrounds of all of our students. We look forward to continuing our planned Black History Month activities and enjoy that our students have added their leadership in adding to some of our activities this month. Check our Facebook page for updates on our activities for the rest of the month.

We encourage you to attend DPS College Night on Feb. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at SDC. The College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) and staff from Durham Public Schools will provide helpful financial aid information that includes college costs, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CFNC resources. DPS will also provide an overview of SAT and ACT assessments taken by students starting as early as eighth grade, how to prepare for them and how to use the results to advocate for your children.

February 11 is the DPS Math Fair, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at SDC. We have several students representing us at this fair.

If your child plans to attend the Literacy through Photography intersession camp, please return the forms and payment as soon as possible.

If your child is at risk of not passing Math I or English I, a form was sent home last week about attending intersession camp for additional assistance.  Transportation is provided.  Please return these forms to the school as soon as possible.

There are two more meetings scheduled for Galapagos travelers—Monday, Feb. 15 and Thursday Feb. 25. The second Galapagos meeting has been changed to Feb. 15 to avoid a conflict with the SCS College Night. Student travelers especially will meet in Ms. Wash’s room from 4:30-6:00. Snacks and drinks will be provided. While all meetings are important, only the Feb. 25th meeting is mandatory for all travelers and a parent or guardian. Check our Here We Galapagos Facebook page for updates.  If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Ms. Wash. Looking forward to seeing you all and gearing up for a great adventure.

If you are eager to see another part of the world, join Ms. Wash in the Cybrary on Feb. 18 at 6PM. The March 2017 SCS EFTour trip is planned for Greece.  This tour covers much of Greece with an option to add 3 days in the Greek Isles. It may seem early to plan, but signing up now will make budgeting easier and anticipation more exciting.  Contact Ms. Wash with any questions.

ACT is March 1st. All 11th grade students must be present to take the assessment. This year students will be able to have their scores sent to up to four NC Colleges and Universities FREE of charge. Students should see Ms. Huth to sign up for prep sessions.

Our Annual College Week is this week! Our topics this week include financial aid, crafting the perfect personal statement, finding the right college fit for you. Please join us for our PTSA meeting on Thursday, February 11th at 5:30 followed by the High School Parent Night on Thursday, until 7:30 p.m.
