Weekly Message October 26-30, 2015

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of October 26th.

Report cards went home with students last Friday. Please make sure that you have signed the envelope and sent it back to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Middle and High School Parents are invited to College Night, October 27th 6-8 p.m. at the DPS Staff Development Center 2107 Hillandale Road. The time is now to prepare for college. Join College Fund of North Carolina (CFNC) and the Advanced Academics Team to receive helpful information on how to prepare, pay for and choose a college. Parents will also learn about SAT and ACT assessments taken by students starting as early as 8th grade in NC, how to prepare for them, and how to use the results to advocate for your children. Spanish translation will be available.

The Glow Dance Party will be held Friday, October 30th from 4:30 to 6:30 in the gym. Admission is $5. This is for middle school and high school students who will be given their own sections in the gym. Tickets, raffle tickets, and glow items like glasses and sticks will be sold this week during all lunch periods. When you purchase a ticket, you can submit music requests. Don’t miss out on your chance to shine—or glow!

The ACT ASPIRE assessment that was being planned for 8th grade students will not be given this school year.

The 9th graders will be traveling to UNC-Chapel Hill for a field on October 28th.

The 8th graders will take this same field trip on November 6th.

We have a few outstanding teachers and students we would like to highlight. Ms. Barnes’ Creative Entrepreneurship and Marketing students won first place (out of 17 schools) in the Stock Market Simulation last week. Ms. Crump has been chosen to be a member of the Teacher Advisory Group for the K-12 Design Lab at NC State.  This is a very select honor and will strengthen our relationship with NC State’s Design College. And Ms. Wolf’s high school art department placed 6th in the state at the NC State Fair. Check out the artwork on Facebook! It’s a delight to highlight all of the incredible things that our students are doing at SCS.

Have a great evening and even more awesome week!

Young Women of Excellence (YWE) Meeting

There will be a YWE meeting Wednesday, October 28th after school from 4:15-5:15 p.m. in Mr. Jackson’s room. Please be on time and dressed professionally.

There is also an opportunity to collaborate with Young Male Achievers (YMA) and NCCU to learn about health issues and work on a joint project. If you would like to participate there will be meetings after school on Tuesdays.

Durham Co-op Market & Kids Voting

Kids Voting Friends,

Sunday, October 25, The Durham Co-op Market will generously donate 10% of all sales to Kids Voting Durham when you mention us at the cash register!  You can snag some yummy, fresh, local goodies for yourself, support a community-built local business, and help Kids Voting Durham raise much needed funds for Kids Voting Durham civic engagement efforts for Durham’s young people.    Win-Win-Win!

In addition to writing another great candidate guide and holding their own candidate forum, this year nearly 10,000 students have already committed to vote in our City Council and Mayor Elections – that is a 30% turnout rate for public school students and likely to be far higher than the adult turnout has traditionally been in municipal elections.  Program funding is Kids Voting’s only limit on the reach of our programs to Durham’s youth.

If you can’t come out Sunday, but want to support Kids Voting Durham, you can make a donation to our work through our Foundation with NC State http://go.ncsu.edu/kidsvotingdurham .  Donations are tax-deductible.

College Crash Course

Are you unsure about what you want to do after high school? Do you need help finding careers that match your interests? Come to Ms. Huth’s College Crash Course after school on Tuesday until 5 p.m. for career exploration.  Middle and high school students are welcome to sign-up on Ms. Huth’s door.
