Weekly Message August 24-28, 2015

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of August 24th.

Progress reports went home with students on Friday. Please review the progress report and other documents that were included, sign the envelope and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher.

On August 25, 2015 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 p.m., SCS will host Curriculum Night. We will begin the evening with information about AIG at 5:30 p.m. There will be a General PTSA meeting at 5:45 p.m. and you will have an opportunity to travel your child’s schedule and meet all of the teachers from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

If your child is taking Creative Entrepreneurship class, they will have an opportunity to win a scholarship between 20K – 100K for college by participating in the H&R Block Budget Challenge. A letter was sent home with students.  We must have parent permission in order for your child to participate. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Barnes.

Our Fall Picture Day will be held on August 27th. Picture envelopes have already been sent home with students. All students will take a picture that will be used in the yearbook. Purchase is optional and students must have their money and picture envelopes to give to the photographer on August 27th.

“Here Comes the Bus” is a new application that DPS is using and provides up to the minute information about the location of school buses on their routes. Instructions for signing up are provided on our website, my blog, and Facebook.

The middle school science classes will be using the Penda Learning website again this year as a way to reinforce material taught in class. This website allows students to create their own avatar and compete with other students (if they choose) for points. Penda allows students to have up to 3 chances to get their best homework grade. Students may also investigate topics of their own choosing in this math and science resource to increase their point totals.  Ask your child how he/she is using Penda.

Our math teachers are using Think through Math (TTM) which is a web-based math resource that is available for all students.  It can be accessed on computers, tablets, or smart phones with internet access.  TTM personalizes learning for each student by differentiating instruction based on their math level (not necessarily on grade level). This program allows students to have fun while doing math with the opportunity to receive assistance from specialized lesson videos and LIVE math teachers (during call/chat times). Students and parents can also view data of how many lessons have been passed and the amount of time spent on the program.  We welcome students to use TTM at home.  Parent letters about access to Think through Math went home with progress reports.  If you need more information or your child’s username and password, please contact your child’s math teacher or Ms. Ellison.

Our first intersession runs September 28-October 16. Students return to school on October 19th. There will be camp opportunities for both middle and high school students. Camp flyers went home with progress reports. Registration for camps is first come first served, so please review this information immediately. Checks may be made payable to The School for Creative Studies.

Contact Ms. Ellison if you have any questions about camp opportunities.

Have a great evening from all of us at SCS, where our vision is the 4 C’s—Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Community.

LOOK! Here Comes The Bus!

The “Here Comes the Bus” application allows parents to view real time school bus information via smart phone, tablet or computer using the very latest in GPS technology.  It allows users to see the location of a student’s bus, both before and after school; the application also confirms when the bus has arrived at the bus stop and at the school.  Users may also receive text alerts or an e-mail message when the bus is within a certain distance of a passenger stop location.  Instructions for signing up are provided below.

How to get started:
  1. Visit
  2. Click the Sign Up Today! Button
  3. Enter school code 97034 and click “Next” followed by “Confirm”
  4. Complete the “User Profile” box
