Weekly Message June 1 – 5, 2015

Thanks to all parents, grandparents, family members, friends, and community partners who assisted us with testing by volunteering your time to proctor. We appreciate all of your assistance. Regular testing administration is now complete.  We will be working this week on make-up testing for students who were absent.  I’d like to remind you all that school is not over.  Instruction is still taking place and there are still final exams, projects, and class assignments due. Please check PowerSchool to ensure that your children are on track with their assignments and encourage them to stay focused until the last day of school! Students will receive their laptops for use in classes between Wednesday, June 3rd and next Tuesday, June 9th. Remember to bring your bookbags back to school to transport your laptop.  Your teachers have directions about saving and backing up your documents from your laptops.

We will offer Credit Recovery Summer School for high school students only beginning June 16th and ending July 8th.  These summer school courses are available to students who do not pass a core class. If your child qualifies, we will contact you with more information after we tabulate final grades.  Transportation and lunch will be provided.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is giving students this year the opportunity to pass their End-of-Grade (EOG) with a level III by participating in a second administration of their End-of-Grade test.  However, in order to participate in this opportunity, students must attend an eight-day instructional program prior to June 30.  Durham Public Schools has chosen to offer elementary and middle school students in grades 4-8th the opportunity to participate in Take Two:  Elementary and Middle School EOG Retest Program.

Eligible students for this program are students who made a Level II on the EOG and are within one standard measure of a Level III.The dates for the EOG Take Two program are June 15-26 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Transportation along with breakfast/lunch will be provided.  If your child qualifies for this program, we will contact you with more information after we receive test scores.

The High School Awards Assembly and activities will be held on Monday, June 8th.  The 8th grade end of year Awards Ceremony and lunch will be held on Tuesday, June 9th.  Please look for more information from the teachers about these two events.

A big thank you and congratulations to our 2015-2016 PTSA Executive Board: Pam Gaines, middle and high school parent, will serve as our president; Lesley Neely, parent of an incoming sixth grader,  will serve as our vice-president; Michele Vincent, parent of two middle schoolers and SCS teacher, will serve as our treasurer; and Leslie Stanfield, parent of two high schoolers, will serve as our secretary. There is still an opportunity to serve on a PTSA Committee. Please visit the SCS PTSA webpage and contact one of the board members or the main office for more information.

Our last day of school is June 11th.  We will release students at 2:00 p.m.
