Weekly Message May 11-15, 2015

Progress Reports and some important handouts went home with students today.

A special note for 8th grade parents: 8th grade science grades on Progress Reports are not accurate. Mr. Riggsbee will be working with Ms. Fleming to get grades for this quarter accurate and updated. Also if students take enrichment class with Mr. Riggsbee, these grades have not been updated yet.  If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me or Ms. Hundredmark.

One of the documents that was sent home with progress reports is the testing schedule.  Many of our end of year tests will be given online. In order to prepare all of the devices, student laptops will be collected at the end of the day on Thursday and will only be used for testing through June. Teachers have planned non-computer based activities for class time during the testing window.

There is one more session for the DPS Saturday Academy for High School EOC courses. The final session will be held this Saturday, May 16 from 9-12 at Durham School of the Arts. This program provides additional support and instruction for Biology, English II and Math I.  Transportation is provided and students must register online in advance at dpsnc.net.  If you have questions, please contact Mr. Dixon.

Thursday, May 14th is the final day for the Encore! Afterschool Program.

Our Annual SCS Fest will be held May 19th at 6:30.  We will begin with our last General PTSA meeting of the year and then have an opportunity to see all of the amazing projects our students have created.

The Advanced Academics Department will offer one more informational session for students and their parents to learn about the Credit by Demonstrated Mastery process.  Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) is a process for earning credit for a high school course by demonstrating a deep understanding of the content without course enrollment or seat time. Informational Sessions will be held at the Staff Development Center on Tuesday, May 19 , 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

CDM applications are due to schools by May 29, 2015.   To learn more about CDM and download a student application, please visit http://cia.dpsnc.net/cdm. The SCS contact for this process is Ms. Tuck Thomas.
