Weekly Message April 13-17, 2015

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of April 13th.

It was so wonderful to see all of our students and staff back at school today to begin the 4th quarter!  This quarter is a very busy one and the testing season and end of the year are just around the corner. We will communicate very important information through our normal methods (Facebook, this weekly message, emails from teachers, notices sent home with our students, my blog, and our website).  Please stay informed by checking the website, listening to the weekly messages, and talking with your child about what’s going on in school and what information they’ve received to bring home!

Report cards will go home with students on Friday, April 17th. It is imperative that you review these report cards and discuss the grades with your children. We ask that you return a signed copy to the homeroom teacher.

This week is College Week. It’s never too early to start planning for your college careers! We kicked off the festivities with a great assembly this morning. We have College Spirit Days and we ask you show your spirit using the assigned theme for the day.

Tuesday, April 14th: In-state College Gear

Wednesday, April 15th: Out of State College Gear

Thursday, April 16th: Lazy College Student

Friday, April 17th: Dress for Success

College Info Night for Parents will be held Wednesday night, April 15th at 6:00 p.m. Topics will be Navigating High School, College Admissions 101, Financial Aid 101, Effective Study Techniques, Highly Selective Admissions, NC Community College Options, and Planeando Para La Universidad.

Next week SCS will host 15 students and teachers from Zhuzhou, China. We are excited for our students to be a part of this cultural  exchange in partnership with Sister Cities of Durham. Our guests will be on campus Tuesday and Wednesday and will also tour Duke University, visit the Museum of Life and Science and attend a Durham Bulls game. SCS could use your help in showing southern hospitality. There are several ways to volunteer including transportation, greeters and food donations for several meals. Please contact Ms. Miglarese, Mr. Boston or Ms. Price as soon as possible for more information.  We know the SCS community will step up to make their visit special.

DPS is offering the Saturday Academy for High School EOC courses in April and May. The dates are April 25, May 2, 9, and 16 from 9-12 at Durham School of the Arts. This program provides additional support and instruction for Biology, English II and Math I. Students must register online in advance at dpsnc.net. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Brown or Mr. Dixon.

The 10th grade students are excited and hard at work planning the first annual International Festival for SCS as a community celebration of local and world cultures. Our Artist-in-Residence, Barbara Rich, is working with the sophomore class on the art of project management, so the festival will be created, directed, and run entirely by 10th grade students. Please plan to attend the festival with friends and family on Saturday, May 9 (times TBD)! We will kick-start the event with a week of activities, including hall decorating, speaker series, and trivia from May 4-8.

Remember that at SCS our mission is Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Community. Have a great evening and successful week!
