I had an opportunity to attend a NCPTA sponsored workshop on Saturday. One of the topics discussed included childhood nutrition. The speaker was Diane Ritchie, MPH, RD, LDN with the Durham County Dept of Public Health.
Diane shared some great information including the following facts and tips:
What kids eat (on average):
- 10 pounds of additives per year; 154 pounds of added sugar; 1.5 cans of soda per day
Connection between nutrition and learning:
- Multivitamins and supplements can raise IQ Scores
- Essential fatty acids improve reading ability
What do Developing Brains Need?:
- Essential fatty acids
- Complex Carbs
- Fiber and protein
Did you know that your child can receive a free appointment with a registered dietician through the Durham County Dept. of Public Health? To schedule an appointment or for more information, please call 919-560-7791.
