Weekly Message September 15-19, 2014

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of September 15th.

Wednesday, September 17th is a PLC Early Release Day. We will dismiss students at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Please mark your calendars for our annual SCS Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 18th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Come and walk through your child’s schedule and hear from all of the teachers about what life is like in their classes.  Students may remain afterschool and we have activities planned to supervise them until parents arrive at 5:00 p.m. Students need to sign-up for an activity outside Ms. Hundredmark’s office if they plan to stay.

We are having the SCS Yearbook signing party for students who have purchased a yearbook from last year on Friday, September 19th.  If you didn’t purchase a last year’s yearbook and would like one, bring a check to the main office by September 19th.  The cost is $40 and checks should be written to Jostens.

On Friday, September 19, 2014 at 6:00 PM, Durham TRY will host a community event at the Staff Development Center that is free and open to the public.  Dr. Aaron White, Ph.D. is Program Director,  Underage Drinking Prevention Research, NIAAA, oversees NIAAA-funded studies on underage drinking prevention.  He is an accomplished speaker and author, with experience presenting nationally and internationally on topics related to alcohol, drugs and youth brain development and addiction.

I’d like to remind you that safety of our students and staff is top priority. As such, we conduct several drills during the school year.  These include fire drills, lockdown drills, and random security checks.  Fire drills are held monthly.  We will notify you of other types of drills either by a letter sent home with students or in a Connect-Ed message. Please discuss these drills with your children.

The last day of the first quarter is Friday, September 26th. Intersession for students is September 29-October 17th.

EXPLORE (for 8th grade) and PLAN (for 10th grade) testing will occur on October 22, 2014. More information will be sent home prior to these assessments.

SCS is excited to announce that in partnership with Sister Cities of Durham, we will be participating in a student exchange with Zhuzhou (pronounced Joo-Joe), China. During this fall intersession, three SCS staff members will be traveling to China to plan the exchange. We are inviting a group of students from Zhuzhou #8 School to visit Durham in April. We are making plans for SCS students to travel to China in Oct, 2015. The trip is open to current 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students and promises to be an exciting learning opportunity. The city of Zhuzhou will be covering many expenses, so the trip will be very affordable for our students. Please join us for an information session for parents and students, October 28th at 5:30pm in the cybrary at SCS.

Have a good evening from all of us at SCS, where there is no box!
