Weekly Message July 27-August 1, 2014

Good Evening SCS Families. This is Ms. Price with your weekly message for the week of July 28th.  We had a great first week of school and have all enjoyed seeing our returning students and getting to know our new students.

The bookbags have been delayed in arriving. As soon as they arrive, we will issue them to the students. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  We will proceed with laptop check-out this week as scheduled.  Please make sure that you have reviewed both the Student/Parent Handbook and the SCS Computing Handbook with your child. The computing contract which is the last page of the handbook, should be signed and returned to your homeroom teacher as soon as possible. All students will receive the Computing Handbook no later than tomorrow.

There will be an interest meeting for the disc golf club on Tuesday, July 29th from 4:15 – 5:00pm in room 231.

Fall Picture Day is Thursday, July 31st.  Order forms have been sent home with students.  All students will have their pictures taken for the yearbook. Purchasing pictures is optional, but students must have their money and order form with them when their picture is taken.

If you are interested in having your child attend afterschool, Encore applications are available in the main office and the Guidance office.  This is a great enrichment program that provides educational support and helps foster positive peer interactions It is also staffed by certified teachers and staff. Spaces are limited so please pick up an application early. There is also space in the Before School program.  Both programs accept students in grades 6-9.

6th grade parents: If you received information in regards to the Tdap vaccination, please set up an appointment with your doctor to receive this vaccination.  You may also follow the directions given on the form for locations in Durham that provide the vaccination free of charge to qualifying students.  The Tdap vaccination is a requirement for all 6th grade students in Durham Public Schools. If your child has had the vaccination, please send in verification to the main office. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Hagan, middle school guidance counselor.

CogATs testing will be on August 6th for all 6th grade students.  This test is the sweep screen to identify students for AIG services and  to identify areas of strength for students so that we can better differentiate instruction. A letter will come home this week with more specifics.

Also, mark your calendars for our first PLC Early Release Day which is August 6th. We will dismiss school at 2:00 p.m.

Have a great evening from all of us at SCS, where there is no box!

Message from Mr. Newark–Music and Audio Production Teacher

Dear SCS, The 7th and 8th grade Guitar students are in need of your help!  We were very luck to be able to order a class set of brand new guitars (Thanks Ms. Price!) but only half of them have arrived.  These guitars are so awesome that the rest of them are back ordered until next month.   If anyone has an acoustic guitar sitting in closet at home I would greatly appreciate you letting us borrow it.  I will make sure that each guitar is used by students who will take excellent care of your instruments. Every instrument will be returned as soon as the remainder of our new guitars arrive (Mid August).  I will also clean them and put new strings on them!   We are currently 5 guitars short of having one for every student. Thanks for your help!
