Futures’ Jr. Biotechnology Summer Camp

BRITE Futures Biotechnology Summer Camps are designed to inspire students and give them a head start on identifying careers in science and biotechnology.

We provide an experience that is both educational and fun regardless of prior knowledge in genetics and biotechnology.

Jr. BIOTECH: Biotechnology Camp for Middle Schools Students

                                    9:00 am – 3:00 pm  July 7-11, 2014

The camp will teach students the fundamentals of biotechnology. Students will not only learn about DNA and how it is manipulated, but they will acquire extensive hands on experience with techniques used by research scientist.

Topics and Activities

Biotechnology Workplace Basic Skills

DNA Extraction / From Strawberries and Epithelial Cells

Sickle Cell Lab- The Mystery of the Crooked Cell

Genetic Engineering Activities

Crime Scene Activities

All activities are aligned with North Carolina State and National Standards

  • Hands–on activities provide students with opportunities to explore biotechnology applications in a laboratory setting
  • Tours of research labs
  • Conversations with research scientists
  • Lunch will be provided
  • Camps take place at the BRITE Research Facility on the campus of NCCU
  • Register now!  Acceptance to BRITE Futures’ Jr. Biotechnology Summer Camp is competitive and limited to 20 students for each camp. Applications will be evaluated by a committee and selected based on the following criteria: letters of recommendation, essays, and date the application is postmarked)
  • Cost per student $100

Applications must be postmarked no later than May 16, 2014.
