Travel Abroad Opportunity for SCS Freshmen!

Dear SCS Freshman Parents:

This year SCS is offering fantastic study abroad opportunities for our hard working students.  When I was a high school student I had the chance to travel to Spain with my Spanish class.  That first trip abroad contributed to an expanded worldview, a new passion for learning, and multiple future academic and employment opportunities.  As international travel has impacted my own life so positively, it is an adventure I love to share with my students.  I have listened to students make firsthand connections in the classroom after leading trips to Greece, Peru, Spain, and Italy.  And this summer, a group of our ninth graders will be traveling to Costa Rica.

As we want these trips to be an option for as many students as possible, we are offering open enrollment for a Spring 2015 trip beginning Friday January 31st, 2014.  This allows for more than a year of fundraising and financial planning.  The 2015 destinations will include Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome!  In addition, the trip is also open for a parent to travel with his/her qualifying student!

This ten day trip is tentatively set for March 23rd to April 1st of 2015 and will be organized through EF educational tours.  Participants will have an opportunity to visit the Louvre, the Champs-Elysees, Arch de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.  Then they will proceed to Venice by train where they will see St. Mark’s Square, the Grand Canal, and the Doge’s Palace along with a glass-blowing demonstration.  Later they will spend time in Florence where they can see the Duomo, the Piazza della Signoria, view a leather-making demonstration, and participate in an art fresco workshop.  Finally, they will continue on to Rome to see the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the Spanish Steps.

The current estimated cost for the trip is $3,385 for students and $3,720 for adults.  However, students and parents enrolled by Feb 28th will receive a $100 early enrollment discount.  This cost includes round trip airfare, 7 nights hotel stay, 1 night train, 2 meals a day, 5 professionally guided sightseeing tours, 1 walking tour, entrance to museums and historical sights, artistic workshop and art demonstrations, a full-time EF tour director, motorcoach transportation, and required travel insurance.  Additional expenses would include the cost of obtaining a passport, lunch money, tips, and personal spending money.

It is our belief that an educational tour such as this aligns with our goals at SCS.  As students experience the world they build communication skills, engage in critical thinking, and they develop the drive to be motivated life long learners.  Additionally, our students will do course work to earn one elective credit for their travel experience.  As the safety of our students is key to such an educational experience we will require that students maintain the highest of behavioral and academic standards (A,B,C) in order to be eligible for the trip.  Students will initially be able to qualify after receiving their first progress reports for the third quarter.  We also know that parents and students will inevitably have questions about the trip and the qualification process.  An informational meeting will be held at SCS on February 6th at 6pm.  Additional questions can be directed to Ms. Turnwald at jaclyn.turnwald@dpsnc.net or 919-323-5889.

 Sincerely,

Jaclyn Turnwald
